Today, I'm excited to show you how to create a tutorial video using Loom. Whether you're looking to produce content for online courses, YouTube, or your clients, this beginner-friendly guide will take you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Get Set Up with Loom

The first thing you need to do is ensure you have a Loom account. While Loom offers a free version, I highly recommend upgrading to the paid version. It's incredibly cost-effective (around $10), and it provides you with a wide range of options that make the process smoother and more professional. I find the custom window resize feature especially handy for recording the correct size for a Youtube screen.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Before hitting the record button, it's crucial to set up your workspace. Have all the tabs and applications you'll need open and ready. Being prepared ensures you won't waste time fumbling around during the recording.

Step 3: Script Your Video

To maintain focus and clarity in your tutorial video, it's helpful to script it out in advance. This is especially valuable if you tend to go off on tangents or get lost in your explanations. Write down key points, steps, or instructions to keep you on track.

You can do this with the speaker notes feature.

Step 4: Use Speaker Notes (Desktop Version)

If you're like me and tend to wander off script, Loom's desktop version offers a fantastic feature called Speaker Notes. It allows you to add text or scripts that only you can see, which won't appear in your final video. Position these notes just above your camera to maintain eye contact with your audience, making your video more engaging.

Step 5: Choose Your Recording Options

Loom provides several recording options. With the paid version, you have even more flexibility. You can record your full screen, specific windows, or even just your camera. In the desktop version, you can set custom screen sizes, offering more control. Ensure your microphone and camera are activated and select the highest video quality (1080p) for the best results.

Step 6: Customize Your Video Settings

Once you're ready to record, you can customize your video settings further. Adjust the size of your camera window, move the bubble around, and even change your background. Keep in mind that it's essential to make yourself stand out in your tutorial videos, so select backgrounds that complement your brand or maintain a professional appearance.

Step 7: Highlight and Draw on Your Video

During your tutorial, you might want to emphasize certain points or draw your audience's attention to specific elements on your screen. In Loom's desktop version, you can use the draw tool to highlight, underline, or circle important information, making your explanations more visually engaging.

Step 8: Record Your Tutorial

With everything set up, hit the record button and start explaining your content. Remember to speak clearly, stay on track with your script, and maintain a professional and engaging presence in front of the camera.

Step 9: Download, Share, or Copy Your Video

Once you've finished recording, you have multiple options for sharing your video. You can download it in various formats, making it easy to upload to platforms like YouTube or share via Google Drive. Alternatively, you can copy the video link directly from Loom or email it to someone.

Step 10: Share Your Video

Sharing your tutorial video is the final step in the process. Whether you need to send it to clients, students, or your audience, Loom provides you with simple sharing options. You can choose to share it directly or place restrictions on the video, depending on your needs.
